A group of volunteers in Dubai created a new Guinness World Record title, 'Largest number of seeds separately potted in one hour by a team of not more than 100 people', on Thursday. The event was inaugurated by Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment.
With over two months of preparations, 100 volunteers from Procter and Gamble, Carrefour, Goumbook and DP World, sowed Ghaf seeds in individual pots.
A total of 15 rows of tables with six volunteers on each table took up the challenge.
While the attempt was to pot up 20,000 ghaf seeds in one hour, volunteers potted 20,600 seeds, breaking the target and creating a new title.
Alex Malouf, corporate communications manager at Procter and Gamble, said: "We care about the environment and joined with Carrefour and Goumbook as they both have the same thoughts on environment. We chose a cause that mattered to people of the UAE.
The ghaf tree is the UAE national tree and currently an endangered species. It is used for many things including medicine, shelter and food by the Bedouins. It is also a tree that does not need that much water to live so we felt it was appropriate."
Tatiana Antonelli Abella, founder and managing director of Goumbook and #GiveaGhaf tree planting programme, said the potted plants will best be planted in November.
