Fahd bin Shuhail, Head of the Consumer Protection Section in the municipality, said the committee came across sale of ornament brids during inspections at the Sharjah bird market recently. This is despite the law which stipulates that all poultry meat and birds sold must be certified by the veterinarian appointed for that particular market, he said.

To spread awareness about the health hazards involved in dealing with unchecked poultry, the committee has distributed brochures and other literature among traders and consumers. The publications provide information about diseases like bird flu, their causes, symptoms and ways of protection.

The committee will check all birds and poultry products in Sharjah, whether kept in official or private farms, markets or stores.
