From Saturday onwards the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority will partially close King Faisal Road for maintenance work for two months. A senior official told Khaleej Times that 4km of the arterial road shall be blocked - 2km in each directions - from King Faisal Bridge to Etihad Square opposite the Abu Shagara and Qasimiya areas.
Sulaiman Al Hajiri, Director of RTA Sharjah for Roads Affairs, said: "Traffic from Etihad Square, Central Market, and Corniche road in the direction of King Faisal Bridge shall be diverted towards the service road parallel to King Faisal Road in the Majaz-1 area."
However, vehicles coming from King Faisal Road shall be diverted to the opposite direction of the same road towards King Faisal Bridge (parallel to the Central Market), he said.
"Part of the asphalt layer will be removed, renewed, painted, and marked again," he explained.
"Galvanised metal barriers will be installed whereas some of the old pedestrian crossings will be renovated, and some more will be built," he added.
Work on Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Bridge
The authority will also begin maintenance work on the intersection of Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Bridge and the First Industrial road, in both directions, from 10pm onwards tonight, Al Hajiri said. The work is expected to be completed in four days.
Maintenance work is being carried out from the Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road in the direction of Al Wahda road, close to the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority office in Industrial area-5.
Al Hajiri said the maintenance work is in pursuance to the directives of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
Urging cautious driving, he said all motorists should observe speed limits, and take alternative roads to avoid the rush until the end of the development works. "All road projects are being carried out as per strict schedules for public convenience."
The road work projects are designed to accommodate current and future needs of urban expansion in the region, enhance traffic flow, and raise the standard of living of residents, Al Hajiri underlined.
