Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) has launched an award after late Shaikha Lulwa bint Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa. The "Pearl of Bahrain" Award for Arab Woman recognises the pioneering legacy of Shaikha Lulwa bint Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa in promoting social work and women's movement in Bahrain.
The first edition of the prize will be presented in 2018 to coincide with the completion of the Pearl Trail, which features on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites and on the sidelines of the 18th Book Fair. Muharraq will also be celebrated that year as Capital of Arab Culture 2018.
BACA President Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa paid tribute to late Shaikha Lulwa bint Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, describing her as a charismatic and iconic figure in the history of modern Bahrain. "This is the least we can do to a name which is engraved in hearts and the national memory, being a symbol of social evolution", she said.
