Dubai Civil Defence and police officials are being praised for their work during the Sulafa Tower blaze on Wednesday, which included safeguarding people's pets from the encroaching flames.
One Sulafa resident told Khaleej Times that the response teams worked quickly to rescue pets stranded on the floors above, noting that there were "a lot of birds - at least 17 different types - and some dogs and cats".
The animals were rescued in cages and brought down the stairs, and firemen made numerous trips up the 76-storey building to ensure that people - and pets - were safe.
Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, assistant commander-in-chief of the Dubai police for criminal investigation, said that the evacuation of the building was carried by a number of entities in less than 30 minutes, and praised the speed at which crews responded to the blaze.
He added that police officers also performed admirably by cordoning off the area, and safeguarding property.According to authorities, forensic experts have begun their investigation into the cause of the fire.
Although there were no deaths or serious injuries, three people suffered minor injuries, including a pregnant woman who was taken to Latifa Hospital because of smoke inhalation. She remains there in stable condition.
