Pipeline relocation ends at Sharjah’s roundabout

SHARJAH — Removal and relocation of electricity, water, gas and sewerage pipelines at the Culture Roundabout in the emirate was completed safely yesterday, without any interruptions in any of these basic services, a senior official announced.

Khalifa Al Tunaiji, director general of Sharjah Public Works Department, said it was a very delicate task, which was completed without any hiccups.

The work comes as part of the construction of a tunnel.

The first phase includes preparing the area for pouring concrete to establish the base of the tunnel.

The works which have been completed, also include the removal of the old cement base and removal of construction waste.

Al Tunaiji said that a tunnel, and not an overbridge was coming up in the area because a bridge would block the view of the beautiful architectural designs of the buildings around the Culture Roundabout, which is considered one of the most popular landmarks in Sharjah.

He said the tunnel construction project, which started in September, 2007, will be completed in September 2009.

The project, he said, will help a great deal in easing traffic coming from airport and Al Wahada Street.
