Billed as Sangam, a meeting place of two rivers, a mushaira brought together versatile exponents of ghazal, nazm and geet from both India and Pakistan to provide an insight into the contemporary trends in Urdu poetry.
The mushaira was organised by Connections in cooperation with Visions and the Academy of Creative Thoughts (Act) at Shaikh Rashid Auditorium of the Indian High School in Dubai as part of the Independence Day celebrations of both countries. The event was both entertaining and meaningful. “This is our second mushaira and we hope to maintain the standard in the future too,” said Farrukh Zaidi, chief organiser.
The poets who recited their works included Prof Shahryar, Waseem Brailvi, Mairaj Faizabadi, Naseem Nakhat, Haider Zaidi, Nayyar Jalalpuri, Atul Ajnabi and Popular Meruthi from India and Prof Sahar Ansari, Saleem Kausar, Ahmed Navid, Athar Shah Khan, Azm Behzad, Ambreen Haseeb Ambar from Pakistan, and Farhat Shehzad from the US.
Among the veterans Prof Sahar Ansari, Shahryar, Saleem Kausar, Mairaj Faizabai and Ahmed Navid impressed with their verses reflecting diverse human emotions and philosophical interpretation of stark realities of life.
For Haider Zaidi, Ambreen Haseeb Ambar, Nayyar Jalalpuri and Atul Ajnabi, it was a debut appearance in Dubai. They were applauded by the audience for their freshness of style and thought-provoking poetry.
Waseem Brailvi, Azam Behzad and Naseem Nakhat made their mark by reciting their verses both in tahtul lafz and tarranum (melodious rendition).
Athar Shah Khan Jedi and Popular Meruthi, the renowned humorous duo, made the listeners happy with their comic fireworks.
Compered by Azam Behzad and Nayyar Jalalpuri, the programme lasted until the wee hours of the morning.
It ended with a special video clip on Indian poet Saghar Khayyami, who passed away recently.
Earlier, the newly-published Kulliaat (complete works) of Prof Shahryar was also launched.
