The woman was detained by Dubai Police on arrival at Dubai International Airport after 0.9 gram of hashish was recovered from her baggage.

But after thorough investigations the Russian woman, whose identity was not revealed by the police, was released after it was discovered that the drug had probably been ‘planted’ on her by one of her business associates.

Speaking |to |Khaleej Times, the 29-year-old Russian woman said she arrived in Dubai four years ago. After working in the media field for some time, she was charmed by the booming business opportunities and social life in Dubai. She then set up her business and during the course of interaction with people from the

business community she met a lot of prospective business partners and investors.

“Only recently I met a Bahraini national in Dubai who lured me with attractive returns if I invested in the gold trade along with him. After being convinced by him, I began to invest in the gold trade six months ago and earned good returns every month,” she said.

“On the advice of the Bahraini national, I also agreed to invest in the real estate sector and handed over a huge amount against a ‘security’ cheque for the amount paid to him, in addition to the expected profits,” she said, adding, “on his invitation, I agreed to visit Bahrain to explore investment opportunities in Bahrain as well.”

But on her return to Dubai from Bahrain she got a rude shock when the police detained her. “It was a big shock for me when the police found 0.9 grams of hashish in my bag,” she said.

The businesswoman added, “I realised that there was something fishy since I do not take drugs and felt that someone might have planted the drugs in my suitcase. In fact, I was sure that it was the handiwork of the Bahraini businessman who probably wanted to get rid of me after issuing me a ‘security’ cheque against the amount I had handed over to him.”

She stated that she was kept under detention for a day at the airport for interrogation.

“The police informed me that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was alerted by a call from Bahrain about the drugs. The caller provided the police with my flight details and personal details,” she said.

“The forensic tests showed no trace of drugs in my urine samples and during interrogation the police got convinced that I was innocent and someone had tried to fraudulently implicate me,” she said.

“I was, therefore, released on bail,” she said, adding that the police also scanned her bank account.

“The police were convinced that I was financially sound and had no negative track record at the bank. Besides, the urine test was negative and nothing during the investigation proved my involvement in the drug case.”

She thanked the Dubai Police for their support by saying that they have proved that they work hard to ensure that justice prevails.

“I am so glad to return to my family without being produced before the Dubai court,” she said, hoping that the Dubai Police will now initiate legal proceedings against the Bahraini national.
