Political violence has returned to haunt Kerala with clashes erupting between activists of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in several places in the last two days.
While two activists of the CPM and BJP were killed in two different incidents of political attacks in Kasaragod and Trichur districts amid Onam celebrations on Friday, three persons were hacked in Kannur and two in Idukki districts on Saturday.
In Kasaragod, CPM worker C Narayanan, 45, was stabbed to death by a three-member gang near Kanhangad. The murder was a sequel to the tension prevailing in the region since Thursday night. Following the activist's murder, a shutdown was observed in the entire northern district on Saturday on the call of the CPM.
In Trichur, BJP worker Abhilash, 31, was hacked to death at Vellikulangara on Friday night. Blaming the CPM for the incident, BJP is observing a shutdown at Kodagara and Puthukkad regions in the district. In the clash that began at Azhikode on Friday night, several houses and party offices were attacked. A senior police officer at Kannur said that 15 houses of the CPM and the BJP workers, two party offices and memorial of slain party workers were damaged in Azhikode and surrounding areas.
