Local nutritional experts, while finalising the draft guidelines that will make up the UAE National Nutritional Strategy and Action Plan for 2010-2015, said on Tuesday that Emirati food is a healthier and nutritious option to the more popular and easily available western fast food items.

“Most Emirati food such as makbous and mahshi includes fish and rice that is either grilled or boiled and that is why it is healthier,” said a senior clinical nutritionist, who was among the several experts who helped draft the guidelines that will be enforced through a multi-pronged action plan.

“Besides, this will also help the youngsters rekindle their association with the local cuisine,” added the expert who did not want to be named.

The proposal also includes preparing a food analysis table comprising local food items. Among other recommendations, the participants suggested presence of at least one dietician at each public and private school.

“Currently, we do not have a single dietician in any school though for many countries, it is a necessity,” said Dr Wedad Al Maidoor of the Ministry of Health.

“The dietician can help check availability of healthy food stuff in school canteens and advise students on healthy eating,” she added.

The guidelines, which have been formulated according to the recommendations of the World Health Organisation, are expected to come into effect through legislation by next year.

“We have to minimise the prevalence of fast food chains through legislation and instil proper dietary habits through educational awareness,” said Dr Salah Al Badawi, Director of the National Project for Control of Diabetes and coordinator for the national nutrition strategy.

“Obesity and diabetes have been identified as key nutritional challenges and all planned activities will help us meet these challenges,” he added.

The guidelines also propose production and import of only organic and fortified foodstuff that includes essential micronutrients like iron, iodine and the required vitamins.

Other proposals include establishment of research facilities and laboratories, budget allocation for a nutritional programme and formation of a UAE diet association that will help implement the nutritional policies and procedures.
