Radio Gilli 106.5FM has partnered with Dubai Outlet Mall to smash a Guinness World Record in order to mark its first anniversary.
The popular Tamil radio station, which broadcasts across the UAE, operated the longest marathon live radio show (106 hours and 50 minutes) from a makeshift studio at the mall for five days starting May 7 until May 11, 2018. The previous world record, held by a Swedish radio station, was 100 hours and two minutes.
Popular radio jockeys RJ Navi and RJ Pradeep broke the world record in front of an official Guinness adjudicator at Dubai Outlet Mall. The team, who were stationed in the mall, interacted with shoppers during the sustained broadcast.
Ashokan Subramaniam, CEO of Radio Gilli 106.5FM, commented: "The name Gilli means "winner" and also "risk taker" inspired by a sport called Gilli-danda which is very popular in the rural and small towns of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan and Pakistan. We wanted to do something along those lines, something challenging and daring, to celebrate our first anniversary. It's our attempt to thank this land of opportunities and all the expats representing different countries who live here, and who have made us such a success. Breaking this world record is an amazing achievement and we are really grateful to Dubai Outlet Mall for hosting us, and the myriad fans and shoppers who came along to give their brilliant support."
Vishal Mahajan, Director at Dubai Outlet Mall, adds: "We're delighted to have partnered with Radio Gilli to facilitate this fantastic challenge. Working very closely with the local community to achieve record breaking events is important to us. Dubai has a very long and successful history of creating amazing world firsts and smashing records and we are proud to have made a valuable contribution to this latest feat that will result once again in Dubai Outlet Mall being featured in the Guinness Book of Records."
