The offences committed by the restaurant included the sale of stale food that was more than a day old in addition to operating under poor hygiene conditions. The grocery shop was charged with the sale of banned milk products, sale of products that did not have the expiry dates printed on them and the lack of proper storage facilities especially for fresh foodstuff.
Mubarak Ali Al Shamsi, Chairman of the RAK Municipality said, the outlets were identified during a comprehensive inspection campaign carried out across the emirate intended to promote food hygiene and control violations during summer.
The municipal inspectors also seized huge quantities of spoilt and damaged food products from various outlets during the campaign. The products were found unfit for human consumption since they were spoilt due to poor storage.
Al Shamsi said that nearly 824 outlets including restaurants, cafeterias, supermarkets, grocery stores, poultry shops, bakeries, water desalination plants, salons and others have been covered during the campaign which started early this month.
Around 51 outlets were identified for violations, and fines ranging from Dh300 to Dh3,000 have been imposed on the violators.
Fawaz Abdullah, head of the Food Control Section in the municipality’s Environmental and Public Health Department, said the major violations especially in food outlets were the lack of proper storage facilities, sale of stale food and operating in poor hygiene conditions.
Birds’ cages in some poultry shops were found to be in bad shape. In addition to this, waste was found to be strewn around, thus destroying the environment.
Abdullah said that the inspectors also fined some salons for lack of proper sterilisation facilities and for not cleaning the premises. Food retailers have been urged to ensure that all fresh products are kept in well maintained facilities to prevent them from being spoilt. Outlets have been also asked to strictly comply with the municipal hygiene laws in order to avoid being fined.
The official said that they would continue with their inspection campaigns throughout summer to ensure food safety and to crackdown on violators.
