This was stated by Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Medical Practices and Licensing at the Ministry of Health and Chairman of the committee.

The meeting was attended by the committee members and representatives from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment and Water and Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority in the ministry’s premises in Abu Dhabi.

Al Amiri said: “The veterinary registration higher committee adopted general guidelines and standards for the registration of veterinary drugs and companies based on the submitted and approved studies by international health authorities, pharmaceutical bulletins, external patches and the completion of analysis and stability requirements”.

He also emphasized that the committee deferred and rejected the registration of 6 other veterinary products, noting that the reasons cited for the rejection range between non-compliance to the conditions and specifications of the committee or authentication from international organizations.

“These drugs are used in different veterinary treatment purposes such as bacterial antibiotic used in the treatment of bacterial infection which may affect sheep, cattle, goals and poultry; other bacterial antibiotics that are used in the treatment of other animals which do not consume food such as cats and dogs and preventive vaccinations to protect newborn calves from infectious diseases”, he elaborated.

Al Amiri also explained that the approved list of drugs also included other veterinary special medicines to help from therapeutic purposes such as dislocated joints; inflammation and rheumatism in the majority of food productive and non-productive animals.

The committee also discussed the registration of 12 industrial sites, while postponed the registration of two. The members also recommended that an inspection team would visit the sites to evaluate their compliance with the manufacturing practices and conformity to the adopted international conditions and specifications.

The committee also reviewed the agendas of the previous meetings with the UAE veterinary representatives, which were held lately in the Ministry of Health to facilitate the requirements and registration of veterinary products and attract international veterinary companies to work in the UAE. Such procedures would increase the numbers of registered veterinary products and positively affect the veterinary sector through providing veterinary medicines with international quality standards and competitive prices.

Additionally, the committee members discussed the lists of forbidden and rejected veterinary products and decided to form a specialized technical committee that would update the list based on the adopted lists of specialized international reference authorities.

Another urgent meeting will be held between the Ministries of Health and Environment and Water to discuss the mechanisms and regulations of the importation and trading of Controlled Drugs and Narcotics (Veterinary Use) in the UAE.
