Relief material sent to flood victims

DUBAI — The Pakistan Association Dubai has collected over Dh1.5 million that will help buy relief goods for Pakistan’s flood victims.

“Twelve containers carrying relief items have already been dispatched to Pakistan,” said Inayatur Rehman, general secretary of the association. Goods for two more are ready to be packed, he said.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UAE Khurshid Ahmed Junejo and Consul General Amjad Ali Sher visited the association on Friday to spearhead a fund raising drive and seek more donations for victims of the country’s worst ever floods that have killed thousands and displaced millions of people.

“The containers sent contained medicines and three were taken free of cost by Pakistan International Airlines and one by airblue,” said Rehman.

He said another two containers carrying dates and water would be sent soon while another two were ready to be packed. “Items such as clothes and shoes – things that can wait are being shipped to our relief team that is already in the field in the affected areas,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Students Association at University of Wollongong Dubai in collaboration with Rabbani Foundations held a flood relief campaign as part of the foundation’s Pakistan Youth Flood Relief programme and donated the items to Pakistan Association. Pakistan Flood Relief Dubai member Kabul Wazir asked people to donate more. “Our main requirements at the moment are packing materials,” he said. Two shipments have already been sent out while items are being readied today (Saturday), he said.
