Residency cap to help diversify work force

Minister of Labour Dr. Ali bin Abdullah Al Ka’abi had recently stated that at the summit the UAE would support a Bahraini proposal of a six-year residency cap.

According to a senior official from the Ministry of Labour (MoL), the move will help diversify the work force imported into the country.

Assistant Undersecretary in MoL Humaid bin Deemas said, “If the proposal is adopted the three-year residency will be renewable for another three years. After completing six years, the worker will have to leave UAE but can still come back after several months under a new contract.”

Bin Deemas ruled out any possible major impact on the market. “The step will be restricted to the unskilled people working mainly in construction, contracting and cleaning. There will be an influx of new people into the country and more way for diversification. They work in fields, which do not require qualifications and skills. They are contractual workers, so it is natural that they exit the country once their contracts come to an end,” he added.
