The Mumbai branch police were in for a shock when they learned that the bag snatcher they have nabbed is a rich garment trader and owns several flats in Mira Road and Nalasopara in Mumbai, New Delhi and also his hometown Bihar.
Mohammed Jasim Jainul Shaikh, 43, a resident of Beverly Park, Mira Road (East), targeted bank customers withdrawing large amounts. He operated with his brother Nasim Jainul Shaikh, 45, and nephew Atikullah Shaikh alias Guddu. The trio would target bank customers withdrawing large amounts and then set a trap to loot them of their cash.
Shaikh was arrested after Rameshkumar Sharma, a peon at Western Paper Material, lodged a complaint that he was robbed by two bikers on November 15 while he was heading to his office after withdrawing Rs 8.5 lakh in cash from Union Bank at Masjid.
The crime branch police launched a hunt for the accused and Shaikh was arrested last week, according to a report in Mid-Day. During the probe, Shaikh revealed that he operated along with his brother and nephew, who are absconding. Shaikh told police that his nephew used to visit banks and give information about those withdrawing large amounts of cash after which Shaikh and his brother would then target the person on their bike. Shaikh had been using this modus operandi for more than three years.
According to police all of Shaikh's properties are bought with the earning from his crimes, though Shaikh claims his investments are a result of his hard earned money from the garment business. Also, his family has given out these properties on high rents.
Police added that Shaikh has no answers as to why he needed to commit robberies if he owns a profitable garment business and is not buying his claims.
