Right-hand drive vehicles' tariff is reviewed

DUBAI - The issue of fixing a tariff for the transportation of right-hand drive vehicles, now banned on Dubai roads, was reviewed by police and customs officials yesterday in a bid to end monopoly by some trailer owners.

They warned that action would be taken against companies trying to take advantage of the situation in a manner that affects negatively on the interest of right hand drive cars. Most cars in this category are those exported to South Asia, namely India and Pakistan.

Brigadier Abdul Rahman Mohammed Rafia, Director of Dubai Traffic Police Department, said after the meeting of a joint team incorporating police and customs officials that a new system was adopted to facilitate procedures.

"The new system is to ensure continuation of services on holidays and evening time, especially on Thursdays, to carry out transactions and to facilitate buy and sell procedures", Brig. Rafia said.

The joint team discussed 'special procedures' for the transportation of right-hand drives. Now, special transportation vehicles will take the responsibility of taking these cars to ports at a unified rate.

This, officials said, will help curb malpractices of transport operators monopolising the services and overcharging clients.

The police team was headed by Brig. Rafia and included four other senior officials.

The team of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone was headed by Sultan Al Jokker, Assistant Director-General for Land and Air Customs, and a number of other officials, including Ali bin Dumaithan, Director Customs, Dubai Zone (right hand drive cars).

Officials said it was agreed that if the improper situation continued, the authorities would reconsider the granting of transportation rights to competing companies in this sector.

The joint team held its meeting at the Cargo Village in Dubai and discussed 'special procedures for the transportation of right-hand drives.
