‘Road of death’ needs more speed breakers

Dubbed by the locals as the ‘road of death’, the Fujairah-Khor Fakkan road witnesses up to five accidents a day. The road had undergone repairs recently and humps were cleared from the sections passing through Qidfa, Mirbeh and Al Qariya.

On Sunday, four accidents took place in a span of seven hours between Al Qariya and Mirbeh, in which several people were injured forcing authorities to block the road for several hours.

In the first accident, which took place around 4.00pm, a Sudanese man and his child had a miraculous escape. While travelling on the Mirbeh-Fujairah road, the Sudanese motorist crashed into the palm trees after losing control of the car in his attempt to avoid hitting a pedestrian. The motorist and his child were rushed to hospital for treatment.

In the second accident, which took place around 9.00pm, a UAE national who was heading towards Khor Fakkan from Dubai, suffered serious injuries when his car hit a crane truck that had unexpectedly emerged from the roundabout. The police rescue team took two hours to extricate him from the mangled car. He was taken to Khor Fakkan hospital for treatment. The driver of the Ajman-registered crane was said to be safe.

The third accident happened around the same time just metres away from the place of the second accident, but on the opposite side of the road.

An Indian motorist swerved into the median and hit a lamp post while he was trying to avoid running over a pedestrian. The motorist and two of his companions suffered moderate injuries.

The fourth accident, which took place at 11.00pm involved a car and a motorbike.
