More than 600 people were killed in the weeks leading up to Hasina's ouster in early August, according to a preliminary United Nations report
Thirty-six-year-old SAK was found dead with stab wounds in a car in Al Yarmook area of Sharjah on September 8. SK, a close relative of SAK, said that she had had a rocky relationship with her husband of 10 years.
Though the police did not confirm the identity of the murder suspect, the relative said he had received a call from AK, who allegedly has fled the country leaving behind the couple’s four children. Details of how SAK was murdered have also not been released though the police said wounds had been found on her body.
The police are still investigating the case.
“I received a call around 4pm from AK asking me to write down the number of the Pakistani family with which he had left the kids,” said SK. “He also told me that he had done his work,” said SK, adding that he did not realise at that time that he was talking about having killed his wife.
SAK was a teacher in a local Pakistani school and had been living with husband for the past 10 years, having moved to the UAE shortly after getting married.
Her ex-colleagues describe her as an extremely beautiful butoutspoken woman. They also said that she often spoke about marital complications with her husband who was less educated than her and apparently worked as a security guard. The couple has four children, the eldest being nine years and the youngest 11 months old who are in the custody of SK in Sharjah.
“SAK was my distant cousin but we met each other only once or twice in a year since her husband did not approve,” said SK. He was a very short-tempered man, added SK.
SK said that by evening on September 8, he started getting calls from Pakistan saying that there had been a huge fight between the couple and that he should check on SAK. “I called her number and the phone was ringing but she did not answer,” he said. By late night, the Sharjah Police found her body in a parked car. SK also told Khaleej Times that the couple had bought the new Mercedes car 15 days ago.
“The kids do not know what has happened to their mother. We have told them that both their parents are in Pakistan and they will be taken to them soon,” added SK who is now completing all legal formalities.
SAK belonged to an educated and influential family from Gujar Khan district in Punjab. “We know AK can never go back to that place because everyone knows what he has done and they will be ready for him,” added SK.
The house where the couple lived has been sealed by the police while an aunt is expected to fly in to the UAE and take the kids back to Pakistan.
The police are yet to release SAK’s body.
A spokeswoman for the Pakistan Consulate in Dubai said that they were cooperating with the police and also offering all help to repatriate the body.
