RTA mulls green fuel for abras

The plan to use natural gas in abras comes under a drive to utilise renewable and environment-friendly energy sources and provide safe and smooth transport for all, Khalid Al Zahid, Director of Marine Projects at RTA Marine Agency, said yesterday.

He said the agency is always in pursuit of multiple environment-friendly energy options for operating marine transport modes. “Research & Studies Centre at the RTA Marine Agency is conducting a study, in collaboration with a leading national company, on the use of green fuel for operating abras.”

Studies are also under way on the viability of adopting hybrid engines for marine transport modes. Such technology envisages combination of fuel engines and electric turbines with a view to producing environment-friendly energy to produce the same amount of power with lesser amount of pollution.

“Operating abras with natural gas will minimise pollution as well as reduce fuel costs by 30 per cent, which will come up to Dh1 million annually. Pollution from smoke columns associated with diesel engines will be cut by 66 per cent, and emission of toxic gases from exhausts of these abra engines will also come down,” said Al Zahid.
