‘Salaam Bombay’ to be Screened on March 3

ABU DHABI — The emirate’s Cultural Foundation will welcome film-maker of international acclaim Mira Nair, present her film ‘Salaam Bombay’
on March 3.

Nair, who combines the talents of a movie director, writer and producer, will also deliver a talk about the movie at the New York Film Academy the next day and also her work in general, including both feature anddocumentary films.

Nair’s first feature film, ‘Salaam Bombay’, shot on 35 mm, was nominated for an Academy Award in 1998 under the Best Foreign LanguageFilm category.

A chronicle of day-to-day life of children living on Mumbai’s streets, the movie also won the National Board of Review Award for Top Foreign Film, the Golden Camera and the Audience Award at the Cannes Film Festival, along with 25 otherinternational awards.

Born in India and educated at Delhi University and then Harvard, Mira Nair began her film career as an actor and then turned to directing award-winning documentaries, including ‘So Far From India’ and ‘India Cabaret’.

Her critically acclaimed films include ‘Mississipi Masala’ (1991), ‘The Perez Family’ (1993), ‘My Own Country’ (1998), ‘The Laughing Club of India’(1999), ‘Monsoon Wedding’ (2001), ‘Hysterical Blindness’ (2001), ‘September 11’ (2002), ‘Vanity Fair’ (2004) and ‘The Namesake’ (2007).

Most recently, Mira Nair directed ‘Migration’ — one of the four short films by acclaimed Indian film directors to raise awareness about AIDS in India.

Next up, she will be working on ‘Shantaram’ with Warner Brothers, starring Johnny Depp. Her production company, Mirabai Films, has also established an annual filmmaker’s laboratory, Maisha, which is dedicated to the support of visionary screenwriters and directors in East Africa and South Asia.

The first lab, which focuses on screenwriting, was launched in August 2005 in Kampala, Uganda.
