Born in India and educated at Delhi University and then Harvard, Mira Nair began her film career as an actor and then turned to directing award-winning documentaries, including ‘So Far From India’ and ‘India Cabaret’.
Her critically acclaimed films include ‘Mississipi Masala’ (1991), ‘The Perez Family’ (1993), ‘My Own Country’ (1998), ‘The Laughing Club of India’(1999), ‘Monsoon Wedding’ (2001), ‘Hysterical Blindness’ (2001), ‘September 11’ (2002), ‘Vanity Fair’ (2004) and ‘The Namesake’ (2007).
Most recently, Mira Nair directed ‘Migration’ — one of the four short films by acclaimed Indian film directors to raise awareness about AIDS in India.
Next up, she will be working on ‘Shantaram’ with Warner Brothers, starring Johnny Depp. Her production company, Mirabai Films, has also established an annual filmmaker’s laboratory, Maisha, which is dedicated to the support of visionary screenwriters and directors in East Africa and South Asia.
