Egyptian scholar Dr Omar Abdelkafy on Saturday night spotlighted the importance and impact of talking nicely and fairly to people during his lecture at the Dubai International Holy Quran Award, named after the late Shaikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum.
The talk, held at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was part of the 22-lecture programme of the global award.
Dr Abdelkafy said talking to people in a nice way has a magical influence on their response. "We actually initiate the reaction we get by our words and the way we express them."
Almighty Allah has ordered Muslims to 'speak fair to people' as affirmed in Verse 84/2, he added. "We have to be wise enough to consider not only others' words, but also their feelings or reasons behind, and try hard to find an excuse for them."
Dr Abdelkafy said people, by nature, like those who are good or speak nicely. "Leaving our tongues uncontrolled will turn them into 'wild dogs' that hurt the feelings of others and could leave a tough-to-remove mark behind."
Great companion Abu Bakr Al Siddiq was once seen holding his tongue with finger and blaming it for his 'sins' though the man was known for his few words and nice talk, Dr Abdelkafy pointed out.
Warning, he said envying people, being jealous about their wealth, falling prey to grief or sickness, or having a misfortune, may turn one's life upside down, and push him to be unfair to others and unpleasantly talk to them."
Dr Abdelkafy said people have to resort to Almighty Allah whenever they have a problem. "We should, for example, give hope to patients, and talk nicely to our wives, children, as well as our neighbours and fellows, be they Muslims or not."
