Veteran journalist PV Vivekanand, 61, former Editor-in-Charge and Editorial Advisor of Sharjah-based daily, The Gulf Today, passed away on Tuesday at a private hospital in Calicut in India. A journalist of international repute, he had written for leading newspapers in the region for over 35 years.

His passion for journalism led him to specialise as a political analyst on Middle East affairs and become a well-known voice in the media writing on issues such as the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Iraq crises and inter-Arab politics that graced the edit pages of English dailies.

A talented writer, Vivekanand was the recipient of one of the most coveted prizes in journalism, the Journalist of the Year Award in 1997, presented by the Tokyo-based International Journalists Congress.

He first came to the UAE in February 1998 after having worked as an Assistant Editor with Bahrain Tribune for a year.

His colleagues paid glowing tributes to the man who gave them several practical lessons in journalism.

He is survived by his wife Chitra, son Anoop and daughter Vismay. He was born in Palghat, Kerala, and is a household name in the southern-Indian state.
