'Sharjah-Dhaid road work will be over by year end'

SHARJAH — The Dh72.5 million project for the expansion and upgrading of the Sharjah-Dhaid Road is expected to be completed by December this year, according to Khawla Al Noman, Director-General of Sharjah Public Works.

Al Noman said that the first phase of the project has been completed.

It featured the addition of two lanes between the third and fourth intersections, at a cost of Dh12.5 million.

"The two-phase project is part of a massive plan for upgrading Sharjah roads network announced recently by the Government of Sharjah," she said.

The second phase of the Sharjah-Dhaid road expansion project is under way, she noted, adding that it will be ready by the end of this year.

"This phase includes the construction of two roads between the fourth and fifth intersections, in addition to the construction of a cement barrier dividing both sides of the highway, " Al Noman explained.

She pointed out that the Sharjah-Dhaid road is a vital one that is used by many motorists daily. "The project would help in minimising traffic congestion and easing traffic movement. The road would be able to accommodate a large number of vehicles heading towards Sharjah International Airport, the Free Zone, University City and the Sharjah National Park, as well as various residential areas," Al Noman added.

The expansion project also includes construction of multiple roads between intersection 1 and 5, and addition of two lanes between the third and fourth interchange.

This will lead to a total of four lanes in each direction, with a total width of 15 metres.

Several pedestrian walkways and parallel service roads have already been constructed, and future works include the removal of traffic islands dividing the road and the construction of cement barriers.
