Speaking exclusively with Khaleej Times, Abdullah Al Zari, Director-General of Sharjah Public Transport Corporation (SPTC), confirmed that the plans to start the metro rail transport in the emirate were being worked out.
“Sharjah has embarked on a study to determine the transport modes in the emirate, and this includes the metro. The study is expected to be completed by 18 months. A consultant has been selected to prepare a Comprehensive Transport Plan for Sharjah," he added without giving further details.
He also said the master plan would determine the timetable for the implementation of the metro system.
Al Zari said the SPTC was working to improve the inter-city bus operations, especially to Abu Dhabi.
"By May 15, 15 large luxury buses will be introduced on the Sharjah-Abu Dhabi route. Evaluation and purchase of buses have already been done," he said.
Al Zari also said that the inter-city routes to other emirates depend on demand.
