Sharjah Govt launches bus route to Abu Dhabi

Sharjah Transport on Wednesday started operating the first government-owned bus route between the emirates of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

The new shuttle service, covering a distance of almost 145km, was 
started after a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Monday between Sharjah Transport Corporation and the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi.

Sharjah Intercity Transport Manager Adel Khalil said the 15 daily trips start from Al Jubail Bus Station near the Fish Market of Sharjah to Abu Dhabi main bus station on the Defence Road.

“Seven 49-seat spacious vehicles are now running in both directions of the new bus route,” Khalil told Khaleej Times. “The service will be available to the public on an hourly basis from 7:30am to 9:30pm against Dh30 per trip in each direction.”

Khaleej Times earlier this year cited Khalil as saying that Sharjah Transport was planning to cover all areas of Sharjah city with 16 new bus routes.

“Being up to the level in terms of safety and convenience, the 30/49-seat intercity buses are attracting more than six million passengers every year,” Khalil said, adding that public buses make 250 trips on a daily basis.

This year, Sharjah Transport launched new bus routes to Sonapur labour accommodations, Sagah Industrial area, and from Sharjah International Airport to Rashidiya Metro Station in Dubai.
