The laboratory conducted 2,914 tests on 6,824 food items of which 2.2 per cent of them were found unfit for human consumption including imported products as well as other food items produced in the local market, according to the monthly report of the Sharjah Central Food Control Laboratory.

Among these causes are the existence of microbes or different chemicals, fungus, bacteria, high levels of chloride and other substances. Some of the unfit products were found to have expired or to be violating the product specifications' card, which stipulates that each product or its package should have its ingredients, translated into Arabic.
