The Sharjah Police have stepped up crackdown on gambling in public places, including residential areas and villas rented to carry out the illegal practice.
The cops are also clamping down on a number of other illegal activities.
A top Sharjah Police official said that residential patrols, known as Insad, have been intensified in various parts of the city of Sharjah, targeting gamblers, street vendors, beggars and people selling pirated CDs and banned tobacco products.
The campaign aims at reducing these negative phenomenon which increase during the winter season. The police have zeroed in on areas which house a huge number of violators that include infiltrators, men absconding from their sponsors and those wanted by security authorities. The official stressed that the crackdown will continue till violators working and staying illegally in the country are flushed out.
Last year, the Sharjah Police arrested a number of Asians in crackdowns on gambling dens. Police patrols target group of people who gather in parks, green areas and squares to gamble, which often triggers violence.
The police also nabbed tenant of a villa, who confessed he had taken it on rent just for the purpose of gambling. He also revealed that he opened the house for only two weeks in a month. He was paid by the gamblers, and also sold them food and drinks while they gambled, the man told the cops following his arrest.
