The phasing out of the private taxis is now expected to be complete by the end of this year.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Rahma Shamsi, Deputy Director of STC, said that there was a delay in replacing the old vehicles with the new metered ones, but declined to give the reasons.
“Only a few of the 2,400 private taxis have remained, and they too will be replaced by metered taxis by the year end,” he said.
"This year, 90 STC vehicles to Abu Dhabi will also be replaced with buses due to high demand from passengers," he added.
“We are watching the working conditions of drivers of these taxi companies and think that private taxis were more successful in Sharjah,” said Gul Zaman, a driver who owns a private taxi. “But we know that by the end of this year, we all will have to leave the country and look for jobs back home because STC is replacing our taxis,” he added.
He also said that several of his fellow drivers had already returned home, while some had been hired by taxi companies and were continuing work with them.
Of the 5,400 private taxis operating in Sharjah, the corporation phased out a total of 3,000 in 2004, and replaced them with 3,000 taxis operated by four franchise companies.
In 2005, 2,400 taxis were to be gradually phased out, but this target has not been achieved. Nearly, 265 Citi Taxis hit the roads by end of December 2004 and the remaining 485 did in 2005. Over 100 of the 850 Union Taxis are also operating in the emirate.
