Sharjah subways to get a multimillion face-lift

CCTV cameras will be installed in the subways on Al Wahda Street.

Renovation of three popular subways on Al Wahda Road will be completed by second quarter of 2016, according to the Roads and Transport Authority Sharjah (RTA Sharjah).
However, the subways will not be closed during the development works, an official said.
The project worth Dh2.3 million is being carried out in collaboration with the Sharjah Urban Planning Council and Sharjah Police, according to a top official.
Ibrahim Abdulqader, a resident on the Wahda road, said it is the right time for maintaining these subways. "They need to be repainted, get a facelift, and let there be sufficient lights."
Echoing the same, Anas Sabri, a daily user of the Wahda subway, said all subways in the city should be monitored with CCTV cameras all the time.
"It is safer and more secure to curb any possible crime."
Eng Sulaiman Al Hajiri, Director of RTA Sharjah for Roads Affairs, said CCTV cameras will be installed at these arterial subways to ensure safety and security.
"Flow LED lights will be fixed as well for a better and sustainable lighting. The external shades will be maintained and repainted."
The walls and floors of the subways will be covered with heavy duty and long lasting tiles, he added. Also, the subways will be divided into two parts; one for maintenance and one for pedestrians.
However, a special barrier will be laid in to protect pedestrians' crossing, he pointed out.
"The maintenance and development of the city subways is part of the RTA Sharjah plans to boost infrastructure services here."
Al Hajiri said: "The authority is dedicated to improve the quality of roads to cope with the underway plans for urban development and economic and tourism, as well as the steady increase of population and the movement of transport."
