Sharjah to construct a new corniche

SHARJAH - The Sharjah Directorate of Public Works will construct a new corniche at Sharjah Creek as part of a major project to transform the industrial areas to residential areas where most of the government departments will be based.

This was announced by Mel Stewart, Engineering Adviser at the Ruler's Office in Sharjah. "The new corniche, which will also include a big number of parking lots, will ease the flow of traffic into the Creek's area that sometimes gets jammed," he said.

"Most of the government departments will be based in this area, which already accommodates the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA), Petroleum Council, Customs and Ports Authority. The project, which will cover Al Jazeera Park on the west side of the corniche, will certainly bring down the traffic jams at this area and help people finish their administrative procedures in a short span of time as the departments are located in the same area," he said.

"The directorate will also link the area with an advanced road network and will construct some wide entrances to the area, Mr Stewart said, noting that the project launched by the directorate to expand King Abdul Aziz Road, which will be linked with the new corniche district, will facilitate the flow of traffic into this area," Mr Stewart added.

In line with the directorate's plans to build pedestrian flyovers and subways in the city, Khawla Al Moala, Director General of the Sharjah Directorate of Public Works, said that the directorate has put out to tender several projects to construct pedestrian subways and flyovers at Al Mubarak Centre (between Qurtoba and Al Khaleej Al Arabi Bridges ) on Al Arouba Road, and at the Sharjah Co-op and Shaikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Mosque (between Al Khalidiya and Al Khan Bridges ).

She noted that the projects will be offered to tender during the next two weeks, and observed that the construction of these crossings, is based on studies highlighting the pedestrians' safety at various areas in the city.

Ms Al Moala said that the directorate will also upgrade and expand Al Tawun Road, which will be a three lane road rather than a two lane road. She said that the project is being awarded.
