Sharjah to launch public transport buses in May
SHARJAH - Sharjah's own public transport buses will hit the roads in the emirate from the beginning of May, easing the travel woes of residents and daily commuters.
With a flat fare of Dh3 and free travel for children below 10 years, the bright orange and white buses will operate on three lines initially.
This was revealed by Abdullah Al Zari, Director-General of the Sharjah Public Transport Corporation (SPTC), after a ceremony in which the buses were formally handed over to the corporation yesterday.
Al Zari told Khaleej Times that the buses would operate from eight terminals on three lines within the emirate in the beginning.
"The central bus terminal is Al Ittihad Square which is being developed to cater to the inter-emirate and inter-city routes," he added.
The three lines are from Al Taawun Terminal to Wasit Terminal, Al Ittihad Terminal to Al Nahda Terminal and Al Sharq Terminal to Sharjah International Airport.
"Complete with modern facilities, including a wheelchair ramp, air-conditioning, IT solutions and low entry doors, the buses will resolve the transportation problems of the residents of the emirate," added Al Zari.
Initially, 25 buses are being launched with facilities for special needs people and separate sitting arrangements for women and families. By the year-end, another 72 buses will be added and finally 142 buses would be plying on 18 routes.
