Normal life was disrupted in all the 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday with business establishments, shops and educational institutions remaining closed following the total "shut down" call given by the opposition YSR Congress Party to protest against the delay in according special status to the residuary State.
Commuters had a harrowing time with the State-owned Andhra Pradesh StateRoad Transport Corporation (APSRTC) keeping bus services off the roads following the shut down call, which was also supported by the Left parties, students' unions and employees' organisations.
Slogan-shouting YSRCP workers took to the streets in all the cities and towns early morning to enforce the shut down call, besides staging sit-ins at APSRTC depots to prevent buses from coming out.
They also put up roadblocks and took out rallies to protest the failure of the Telugu Desam Party government to get special status from the Centre.
Hundreds of YSRCP activists were taken into preventive custody by the police all over the state to prevent untoward incidents. Former minister Parthasarathi, Vijay Sai Reddy and Vangaveeti Radha were among the YSRCP leaders taken into custody.
