A first-of-its-kind smart application - 'Malabes' or 'Clothes' app - to ease the donation of second-hand clothes has been launched by the Beit Al Khair Society.
Abdeen Taher Al Awadhi, director-general, Beit Al Khair Society, pointed out: "This pioneering project is in response to the 50-year charter initiated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed, in the ninth article of this historic document, has called for an annual growth in humanitarian works parallel to the economic development of the emirate of Dubai."
The Malabes app will give a boost to the project launched in 2012 whereby a number of containers have been placed nationwide for collecting used clothes, he added.
"The collected clothes are sold to recycling companies, while the proceeds are spent on an array of charity programmes."
This app is expected to remarkably increase the volume of collected clothes, he underlined. "The revenues of the sold old clothes over the last few years have exceeded Dh7million, and these were all spent on a slew of projects for the benefit of vulnerable people."
Abdullah Al Ustaz, assistant director-general, Beit Al Kheir, said donating old clothes will become easier with this smart app.
"The Society, in collaboration with a huge fleet of agents of a specialised recycling company, will collect the donated clothes as quickly and conveniently as possible."
