The new bridge will, in fact, consist of six bridges and a tunnel and is expected to cost Dh250 million upon completion.
The bridge will be constructed by the Ministry of Public Works in coordination with the Ajman Municipality as part of its infrastructure development in the area.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Yehya Al Reyaysa, Director-General of the Ajman Municipality and Planning Directorate (AMPD), said work has started on the bridge that will look like a spaghetti with six outlets leading to various parts of the emirate and linking Ajman, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah, as well as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
A tunnel will also be constructed under the bridge to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
“The bridge will feature three lanes in each direction. It will take around one-and-a-half years to be completed and is expected to be formally inaugurated for public use in June 2012,” Al Reyaysa said.
“Al Hameediya Bridge is over one of the arterial roads in Ajman heavily used by motorists daily and the new project, once completed, will ensure better flow of traffic to the emirate.”
The municipality is sparing no efforts in ensuring the necessary infrastructure keeping in pace with the developments witnessed in various fields.
“Ajman is witnessing a boom in the field of investment and tourism and our job is to meet the demands of the residents, investors and tourists of the emirate in the best manner. We are also witnessing a drastic increase in Ajman population and we are expanding all roads and developing new ones to meet the demands of the growing population.”
Work is being carried out during day and night on the bridge project to ensure it is inaugurated on time.
