Special needs students perform well in exams

ABU DHABI — Students with special needs who joined mainstream schools at the beginning of the year have performed well in examinations. All of them were studying in government schools. This was announced by the Special Needs People Department in the Abu Dhabi Education Zone yesterday.

Of the 15 special needs students, 14 sat for the examinations and obtained good percentages. Some of them even performed better than their regular counterparts, head of Special Needs People Department in ADEZ, Amal Al Junaibi, said.

Of the 14 students, the three who grabbed top positions in their classes are visually-impaired. Maryam Othman Al Hosni of sixth standard in Al Janaen School stood first in her class by obtaining 92 per cent, Shaikha Habis Al Mansoori of fourth standard in Al Muzdalifa school stood fourth in her class by obtaining 93 per cent, and Munira Rashid Al Marri stood fifth in her class. Khalid Jamal stood third in his class with 87 per cent.

Al Hosni got 100 per cent marks in Mathematics and English Literature.

The students were brought from Centre for Special Needs in Mafraq, which is being run under the Zayed Higher Organisation for Humanitarian Care. The Zayed centre also shelters three kinds of needy children — special needs, orphans and minors affairs.

“We are very happy to see the results of the merged special needs students, some of whom performed better than the normal students and the school authorities rendered tremendous support to these students,” Al Junaibi lauded.
