In keeping with the instructions of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform the emirate into a smart city, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) will cross over 250,000 meters within five years, at a cost of Dh7 billion.
The authority said in a Press release that the old mechanical meters would be replaced with “state-of-the-art smart meters based on the latest global technological specifications”.
Dewa chief executive Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said the authority would become the first service provider in the region to launch such a platform.
“The new smart meters will automatically send usage readings over the latest communications systems, such as fibre optic networks, which will maintain all consumption records and consumer operations.”
The meters will send data automatically to Dewa, while it would provide customers with detailed information on their monthly consumption, the authority said. Dewa was working to drive the sustainable development of Dubai, by devoting all its efforts and resources to enhancing the emirate’s position as a global hub for trade, finance, and tourism.
