A global study carried out last year by the Centre for Adaptive Disorders and Headache at the University of Pavia in Italy — of which the UAE was part — indicated that loss of productivity due to headaches alone affected some 200,000 people in the emirates daily.
Following results of the study, the UAE Ministry of Health and Dubai Municipality, along with the Al Futtaim Group, launched the UAE Corporate Management (CPM) campaign in June 2008, titled ‘Relief’.
The financial crunch is affecting employees psychologically and leading to stress-related headaches, says Dr Adel Hassan, a pain management specialist at the Belhoul Specialty Hospital. He urged firms to introduce corporate pain care at the workplace.
“Companies can create awareness and also acknowledge the fact that working conditions can create body pain,” he said.
According to the doctor, corporate pain is inevitable since employees spend majority of their lifespan in an office environment.
Persistent work floor pain disrupts work, delivery of tasks, lessens the employees ability to handle stress, weakens their immune system, and can result in a great deal of anxiety, anger, and depressive symptoms. “Annually, pain costs 50 million lost workdays, more than $3 billion in lost wages and more than $100 billion in lost productivity in the US alone. About 75 per cent of that lost production comes from reduced work performance, not absenteeism,” he said.
The study found that 4-5 per cent of the global population suffers from chronic daily headache, which can generally be treated by over-the-counter painkillers.
What companies can do
- Develop a corporate awareness programme
- Make a wide range of effective over-the-counter pain killers available at work
- Ensure ergonomic sitting and posture correction
- Have a special protocol for female employees for their gender related work
- Use simple software that will remind employees every hour to take a few minutes break on typing and computer to eliminate Repetitive Strain Injury and depression or by reducing eyestrain levels.
