The 45-year-old Sudanese who quit after 33 years of smoking a packet a day, Gasim says that his life has changed radically after 2007. “I still remember the first drag in a school hostel when a fellow student forced me to try it. I felt like a man... like a king,” he explained, remembering the day he got addicted.

However, Gasim learnt the lesson the hard way. Though his body had started showing signs of self-abuse, it was only when he started spitting blood that Gasim decided to give upthe habit.

“My wife admonished me, and it was for her and the sake of my two daughters that I gave up the bad habit,” he added.

“I have never had the taste of food in the years that I smoked,” he said. “But since I stopped, I am a healthier person,” he said.
