In a first-of-its-kind precedent, the Ministry of Education directed public schools throughout the UAE to administer a central exam during term two for students who did not earn passing grades in the first term.
The exam will be held from March 11 to 15, allowing retakes for mathematics, physics, health science, chemistry and biology subjects.
This new policy will come into effect for all public and private schools who implement the ministry curriculum from grades 10 to 12, reported Al Roeya.
Students will be subject to an electronic examination administered through the SWIFT Assess program for ministry schools, and paper examination for private schools following the ministry curriculum.
The duration of the exams will be for two hours, with a maximum limit of 25 multiple choice questions that contain material from the first term. Students missing out on these exams will be graded according to the marks obtained at the end of term one.
Earlier, the ministry only allowed the retaking of the final exam at the end of the academic year.
The results of the first-term examination showed higher number of students failing in five academic subjects. This is despite the fact that the ministry made every effort to exercise leniency in the grading scheme, giving failing students 30 marks to attain passing grades.
Unfortunately, many students were unable to score enough marks and their exams were labeled incomplete. The ministry issued a memorandum containing a guide for the new exam for all public school administration personnel.
The exam aims to identify missing skill sets and to set up comprehensive remedial plans for students who received the mark of incomplete in their respective subjects. The paper during the examinations will be downloaded from the SIS system.
