The Waste Management Department of the Dubai Municipality on Sunday succeeded in pulling out a 100-tonne wooden dhow from the Dubai Creek waters, near Bani Yas metro station, said Abdul Majeed Saifaie, Director of Dubai Municipality's Waste Management Department.

The achievement is part of a cleanup drive launched by the department in mid-June, aimed at cleaning up the creek of any such shipwrecks and other equipment as per the highest international standards.

Saifaie said a team from the Water Canals Section at the department has been formed to recover the sunken dhow without causing any harm to the wharf as well as the employees.

"The only trouble we faced was the weight of the ship since it carried on board a huge quantity of food items and goods," he said.

The cleanup operation has been made in coordination with a number of strategic partners of the Dubai Municipality such as the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the Dubai Customs, along with a number of divers of the Emirates Marine Environment Group (EMEG).
