Survey on Out-of-Pocket Spending on Healthcare
DUBAI — The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) will soon release results from a household survey detailing several health issues, including the average out-of-pocket spending on healthcare per family.
The survey, which is the first such comprehensive one to date, was carried out in Dubai between July and August last year. It took into account 5,000 families, half of which are UAE nationals.
“We are compiling the results and are expected to release them shortly,” said Dr Eldaw Abdalla Suliman, Head of Research and Performance in the authority’s Health Policy and Strategy Sector. “The survey is expected to help design policies and evidence based programme,” he added.
Also to be released soon is a fertility study that will analyse the needs of maternal and child services for Dubai. The study, which is currently also being compiled, has taken into account the fertility trends according to age, occupation and education of Emirati women, said the researcher.
“The study will help us evaluate the number of maternal beds we require and how we can plan this effectively for Dubai. It will also help to better understand the future population structure which is important not only for healthcare, but other sectors as well,” he explained. He also said that priority healthcare issues included cardio diseases and diabetes. “These have the most mortality rate and huge spending as well,” he added.
Dr Eldaw said that plans were afoot to publish total eight such surveys including those on insurance coverage and health of the elderly.
At present, his department is involved in training up to 100 healthcare professionals in research methodology. “We believe that research is a driver of growth, innovation and development,” said Dr Essa Kazim, CEO of Health Policy and Strategy at the DHA.
“We would like to develop highly qualified staff and inculcate the culture of research to analyse this complex data in evidence based, rational and effective manner,” said Dr Khalil Ibrahim Qayed, Director of Medical Education at the authority.
The programme that began in December 2009 is conducted at the authority premises every week.
