The Hyderabad Police on Friday arrested four persons- a Pakistani, two Bangladeshis and a Myanmarese national - who are suspected to have links with the banned terror outfit Harkat-ul-Jehadi Al-Islami (HuJI). The arrests gain significance coming as it does on the eve of India's 69th Independence Day on Saturday.
The Special Task Force (STF) and the Central Crime Station (CCS) carried out the arrests in a joint operation, sources said, adding that the development raises major security concerns in Telangana.
The arrested Pakistani national, identified as Mohammed Nazir and four others had taken shelter in a house in Chanchalguda area in the Old City for the last two months, police sources said, adding that Nazir has been in India for the past five years. Police are investigating about their activities and affiliation with HuJI and possible terror links.
All the four arrested persons were staying in the city using fake passports and some incriminating material was seized from them, a senior police officer said, adding: "We are still verifying their intentions of illegal stay in city. They are already in possession of several fake ID proofs in their names. These four members have been in touch with two locals who were facilitating their stay."
The City Police, in view of the Independence Day celebrations, have been conducting extensive search operations across the Capital in the past few days after Hyderabad, along with a few other cities, was put on high alert following specific intelligence inputs. Further investigations are on and the cops are expected to make a statement later in the day.
