Tailgating caused Capital bus crash: Police

Not leaving enough space between vehicles led to the three-bus crash that injured 47 people, including students, in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, the Abu Dhabi Police disclosed on Saturday.
In addition to that, many of the students were not seated in the school buses and others hadn't fastened their seat belts, contributing to injuries among students, a senior officer with the Abu Dhabi Police said.
Three buses including buses of Belvedere British School and Al Dhafra Private School were involved in the accident on Khaleej Al Arabi Street.
Brigadier Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, Director of the Central Operations Room at the Abu Dhabi Police, said that the police had contacted the injured students and found out that they were not sitting or wearing seat belts when the accident took place.
He urged the school authorities to make sure that students are seated properly and drivers are abiding by traffic laws.
The bus drivers should make sure that students are sitting in the bus and have fastened their seat belts, he said in a statement through Aloum Al Dar.
School Transport Manager Omer Al Shahi said that both the schools are not affiliated with the transport authority but operated the buses through a private agency.
By Saturday, 41 among the injured have been discharged and six others are still undergoing treatment in hospital.
