To meet the objective, the SPTC is in the process of setting up a dedicated dispatch centre for taxi bookings.
“We are would be signing the contract with the supplier shortly and by the end of the year, the dispatch centre will be ready. Gradually all franchise companies will be linked to it,” Al Zari told Khaleej Times recently.
Al Zari said, “The parking meters would be linked to the dispatch centre. People can book a taxi by putting Dh1 in the slot after which a receipt stating the taxi number plate will be issued. The receipt will also state the estimated time of arrival of the taxi.”
Training for call operators/agents had started, he said. “The SPTC wishes to offer the best services and resolve the transport issues of the residents of Sharjah. This centre is one such project that aims at controlling taxi operations in the emirate,” he added.
He also said that at least 50 per cent of the fleet — that is 2,000 taxis — would be linked to the centre. “However, booking a taxi over the phone will cost Dh5,” added Al Zari.
