Teachers take part in ‘special needs’ training

DUBAI — Nearly 30 male and female teachers and inspectors are attending a special training programme organised by the Department of Special Needs Programmes in collaboration with the British University in Dubai. During the three-day programme, participants will gain insight into and familiarisation with the new educational strategy to be adopted in teaching students with Down’s syndrome.

Ann Marie, consultant to Education Minister on special needs affairs, said there is a need of a competent teacher who can discover the skills of special needs students and develop them. Various methods can be adopted in dealing with Down’s syndrome students, she added. The Makaton programme adopted in 31 countries has proved to be effective in handling such educational problems. It also helps overcome violent behaviour among students, she said.
