The deterrent effect of punishments

This is a gross violation of labour laws as the company was duty-bound to cancel the workers' labour cards, give them their end-of-service benefits and pay them their pending salaries, prior to the termination of their services. This must not go unpunished.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs asked the company to hold in abeyance the termination of employees until all the necessary procedures are completed. But that is not enough. Our appeal to the ministry is that the company be held accountable for what it did and meted out proper punishment for callous flouting of the law of the land. If such companies are allowed to go scot-free, it will encourage them to repeat similar offences with absolute impunity. And others will follow suit and anarchy will ensue.

Therefore, it is imperative that exemplary punishment be meted out to the company in question. Only then will other potential offenders be deterred from perpetrating similar offence.
