Tonnes of construction waste, debris, plants and other wastes were cleared from the suburban townships of Al Wathba and Baniyas in the Capital.
The campaign, launched by the Abu Dhabi City Municipality in cooperation with Waste Management Centre, Demolition & Removal Team, Baniyas Police Station and Al Wathba Municipal Centre, has been successful in removing piles of waste.
The campaign targeting solid waste was started in June and will continue until all such waste is disposed of, said the municipality. It followed a series of programmes aimed at raising the public awareness about the removal of all types of waste through forums or Multaqa and residential district councils or Majlises.
The Guide to Laws applicable to the construction works in the emirate was also distributed to the residents during the campaign.
The guide explains a number of penalties applicable to various violations, and the municipality called on community members, construction sites, workshops and industrial facilities to comply with the rules.
Some of these offences like constructing a building or structure without erecting a temporary structure or scaffolding, lacking security and safety measures for pedestrians as well as surrounding buildings during the building or demolition works, carrying out construction or demolition works without a proper permit, and carrying out internal works such as partitioning without a permit.
It also covers carrying out works in violation of the approved layout, providing housing for workers and technicians at work sites without permits, throwing waste in undesignated areas, generating sounds above the permissible levels, lacking protection of excavation works in areas adjacent to infrastructural projects, and carrying out demolition works in a way that constitutes a risk to pedestrians and surrounding facilities as well as burning waste at site.
There are 32 offences which can cause fines up to Dh50,000, depending on the nature of the offence and its impact on the environment.
The civic body has called on all community members to contribute to maintaining the attractive appearance by keeping the city tidy.
In keeping with its strategy of maintaining the appearance of cities, the municipality will continue with its inspection and awareness campaigns. - haseeb@khaleejtimes.com
