It is hard to resist not visiting the Sri Krishna Sweets shop located on the Hamdan Street every time you are around the area. Oozing with the familiar whiff of Indian sweets and savouries, the sweet factory is a haven of delight for gourmands. The chain's flagship restaurant and sweet shop is in Dubai.
Sri Krishna Sweets in Abu Dhabi is the third franchise in the emirates of the decades-old pure ghee sweets business from India. The first one was opened in Coimbatore in 1948, just a year after the country got its independence. Since then, the sweet business has been expanding aggressively - opening a new branch almost every year. To date, there are 66 retail outlets across India and four in the UAE in Karama, Meena Bazaar, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi. A fifth branch at Mussafa is in the offing and will be launched by mid-November this year.
The chain's longevity and popularity is primarily due to its dedication to tradition and willingness to stay committed to the original taste and preparation style. Its sweets and savouries still have the same feel and taste as they did when the founder N.K. Mahadeva Iyer first prepared 'pure ghee sweets' in Coimbatore more than six decades ago.
Sri Krishna Sweets has since diversified its offerings and now the sheer variety at the shop can baffle even the most selective customers; it serves 84 types of sweets and savouries. The retail store is open seven days a week from 10am to 10pm.
